The best events in Kensington throughout Winter 2019-2020
With a crisp chill in the air and plenty of big coats out on the streets, winter is a unique time to visit Kensington. Whether you’re in London for a few days and want to get a feel of what the locals get up to at this time of year, or you’re specifically staying in Kensington for a special event, you’ll want to know what the best things to see, do and experience are.
With Fraser Suites Kensington as your guide, let us point you towards some of the best events in Kensington throughout Winter 2019-2020.
Top events in Kensington this winter:
- Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park – December to January
- New Year’s Eye across the City – 31st December to 1st January
- Ice Rink at Natural History Museum – 19th October 2019 to 12th January 2020
- Cirque du Soleil LUZIA at Royal Albert Hall – 12th January to 1st March
- Movie Singalongs at Prince Charles Cinema – Throughout January
- Date: 21st November to 4th January 2020
- Venue: Hyde Park
To say the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park is a big Christmas market would be a gross understatement. What started as a fun market in the park has morphed into something that’s a cross between an arena/theme park/pop-up bar and food galore…..and yes there are Christmas market stalls too.
We always recommend someone visiting London and looking for an extremely festive activity to wrap up warm and make the short walk over to Hyde Park just to see the spectacle of everything lit up and all the rides on at night.
You can do anything from drinking Viking style cocktails to eating mini Dutch pancakes to watching Paddington bear performing an ice skating show (oh yes, it’s a real thing).
More information is available at the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland website here, where you can also buy tickets to some of the performances.
New Year’s Eve
- Date: 31st December to 1st January
- Venue: Across the city
There’s always a party atmosphere in London on New Year’s Eve, especially if you’re one of the thousands who flock to the Thames to watch the fireworks in the middle of the river. If it is something you were planning on, it should be known that certain areas down by the river are ticketed and it’s the only way to guarantee entry. Information about that can be found on the London.gov website.
Closer to our doors, some of the NYE highlights in Kensington include a seven-course meal at Gordon Ramsay’s Petrus, Bombay Vintage Glam at Dishoom Kensington, or if you fancy a quick hop on the tube, the over the top New Year’s Eve Ball at Evolution London.
Ice Rink at NHM
- Date: 19th October 2019 to 12th January 2020
- Venue: Natural History Museum
Now something of a winter tradition in the city, the ice rink at the Natural History Museum is one of the best in the city and an activity that has to be on anyone’s list when visiting London in winter.
When you go, and the Waterhouse building is all lit up with fairy lights around the rink, you could be forgiven for forgetting you’re smack bang in the middle of London.
The rink isn’t only open for Christmas. It gets a head start on others by opening in the middle of October and going all the way through until mid-January. Booking in advance is advisable, especially on the weekends, as you may have to wait for the next session to start upon arrival.
More information about tickets and opening hours is available from the NHM website.
Cirque du Soleil LUZIA
- Date: 12th January to 1st March
- Venue: Royal Albert Hall
Officially the first event in the 2020 calendar for the Royal Albert Hall, Cirque du Soleil comes back to London to showcase their new dazzling and otherworldly production LUZIA.
As with many of their shows, the plot is slightly surreal and involves a mixture of intriguing visuals and unbelievable acrobatic performances. If you’ve never been to a Cirque du Soleil show before, you’re in for quite a treat.
This is the first time the show will be performed in Europe. Full information and tickets can be found on the Royal Albert Hall website here.
- Date: Throughout January
- Venue: Prince Charles Cinema
After the plethora of Christmas movies have finished their seasonal run, regular service resumes at the Prince Charles Cinema. Now technically it may not be in Kensington, but anyone with an evening free can hop on the Piccadilly line and be standing outside the famous Prince Charles Cinema is just around 15 minutes, give or take.
The movie singalongs are the stuff of legend at the theatre, and you can expect to sing to your heart’s content to movie classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Sound of Music, Dirty Dancing and Grease.
You can see which singalongs are happening when you’re free, as well the special screenings taking place on the Prince Charles Cinema website.
